Take it Easy

The day started out ominously. Thom and I had a brisk 5 mile ride along Route 66 until we had to turn on to I-40. As we turned there was a sign that said Road Construction Ahead. I cringed to think of riding through the road construction. Then 100 yards later there was a sign that said End of Construction. Our fresh legs were assisted by a tail wind and descent from nearly 7,000 feet above sea level to under 5,000 feet above sea level. We reached Winslow (about 55 miles) averaging over 20 MPH. You know you are doing well when the guy who was cleaning the Port O Johns at the rest area complimented us.

When we arrived on "The Corner" in Winslow. There were some people taking pictures of people with the Glenn Frey statue wrapped in a banana costume. It had something to do with sunscreen. They loved Thom and my banana socks. Maybe we will be in a commercial or print ad. I've always dreamed of being a web influencer.
Here are a few shots.

While waiting for Claudia, Thom and I had an early lunch. I celebrated with a banana Nutella crepe.

I am counting on Claudia posting some pictures of the three of us and two of us with the statues since we used her camera.

We then continued our ride onto Holbrook which was about 30 miles away. While the slight incline slowed us down a little and we had to take time to change a flat on Thom's bike, we were at our hotel in Holbrook before 2:00 PM.

Here is the ride on Strava:

We had a discussion about whether we should do another 20 or 30 miles but decided to celebrate a good ride and end the ride. That gave the three of us time to tour the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest National Park. Here are some of my pictures. Thom and Claudia took some great shots. It is the most interesting landscape we have seen so far.

Our Progress:
Thom is pointing to where we are on the map.

Here is the table

Tomorrow we hope to reach Gallup, New Mexico.

  2. Glad to hear you are making great progress and managing the ups and downs (and poor shoulders!) with good humor. Did you see the "girl in a flatbed Ford" on the corner in Winslow?
